Blue Canyon Boys
3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
The genre of bluegrass has its generations, with Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers of the first generation blending it’s way into the second generation of JD Crowe, Seldom Scene, Del McCoury and many others. Similarly, Colorado has its bluegrass generations prominently starting with Hot Rize and the Bluegrass Patriots, and leading into the Left Hand String Band from the 80’s and 90’s. In the early 2000’s the Blue Canyon Boys formed and over the past 20 years they have landed themselves solidly atop Colorado’s second generation in the bluegrass tier.
The Blue Canyon Boys are equal parts purists and innovators when it comes to Bluegrass: they stay true to the form’s roots while constantly reimagining their relationship to tradition. Never settling for the same-old-same-old nor comfortable sitting back and going through the motions, the Blue Canyon Boys continuously quest for the song and the sound that drives their collective bluegrass spirit. The result is a toe-tapping mix of haunting standards, genre-bending arrangements, and catchy original numbers—all built on the bedrock of their collective bluegrass mastery.
Ever since founding members Jason Hicks and Gary Dark launched the Blue Canyon Boys in 2003, the Blue Canyon Boys have raised the bar for bluegrass bands. They bring it all: seamless brother-duet style, crisp instrumentation, unvarnished lyrics and subversive humor. After winning first place in the 2008 Telluride Bluegrass festival band contest, the Blue Canyon Boys went off at full tilt, taking the bluegrass circuit by storm, performing in illustrious venues across the country as well as internationally. Filling out the Blue Canyon Boys sound is Drew Garrett (Bass/vocals) and Chris Roszell (banjo/vocals.)
The Blue Canyon Boys feature diverse two-, three-, and four-part harmony stackings on top of creative and original interpretations from the traditional bluegrass repertoire, catchy originals, and tasteful covers from the rock n roll world. Their distinctive sound, honed from two decades of performing together, moves easily from instrumental wizardry to playful ribbing. Ultimately and repeatedly, they hit a high note—the rare confluence of harmony that leaves the soul ajar.

Cash'd Out
5:15 - 6:45 p.m.
“Some people are impressionists. These guys leave an impression”. Says Bill Miller, owner of Johnny Cash.com about Cash’d Out, a Lake City Festival favorite. After thirteen years, traveling hundreds of thousands of miles on the road and winning over as many fans, fans who still continually tell the group how grateful they are that Cash’d Out so righteously carries the torch of the Johnny Cash Show. Besides music critics anointing Cash’d Out as "the next best thing to Johnny Cash”, their highlights have been many. W.S. Holland, Johnny Cash’s longtime drummer, has sat in with Cash’d Out; front man, Douglas Benson, has played Johnny’s cherry sunburst Guild guitar (courtesy of Mr. Miller); “Cindy Cash came to a show and was moved to give me a glass locket that was her father’s,” explains Benson; Longtime Johnny Cash manager Lou Robin has also been to several Cash’d Out shows and claimed that if he closed his eyes it was as if “going back in time.”; And most recently, an unforgettable evening performing the music of Johnny Cash with the San Diego Symphony as a special event for their Summer Pops Series. The band’s live shows respectfully reference the late, great Man in Black's Sun Records and early Columbia era sound, combined with the energy of the classic multi-platinum live recordings from Folsom Prison and San Quentin. The group's genuine love (and authentic recreation) of Johnny Cash’s music and its universal appeal fans of all ages & of all musical genres makes each Cash’d Out show a must-see event.

Bruce Hayes
Music between acts
The eccentric mindset of acoustic musician Bruce Hayes has been an influential part of the Colorado music scene for the past 3 decades. He helped define the modern day “jam band” genre, having collaborated on the early works of the String Cheese Incident and Acoustic Junction. He continues to explore and expand the horizons and possibilities of electro-acoustic multi-ethnicity. Hayes has a passion for acoustic instruments – both their sound and their heritage. He’s somewhat of a fanatic as a performer, collector, historian, and even horse-trader. Live, the instruments become as much the performer as Hayes, accompanied by an amplified percussive foot board of his own design. You can’t really pigeonhole Hayes. He’s been hailed as the “Jimi Hendrix of the mandolin,” yet his work is a fusion of musical styles that combines acoustic and electric instrumentation with elements of rock, bluegrass, Americana, Celtic and blues. If his music was coffee, we’d be ordering the Colorado Mountain blend.
