What Is Main Street?

Main Street is a program of the National Trust
For Historic Preservation.

Since 1980, over 2,000 communities in the United States utilize
the Main Street model of commercial district revitalization.

Over 57,000 new businesses were established in those towns,
230,000 jobs were created, and 93,000 buildings were
rehabilitated.

Main Street communities range in size from large to small.

Main Street is entirely voluntary, locally run and funded, and is a
cooperative effort between businesses, citizens, and local
government.

The state branch
(Downtown Colorado Inc.) provides technical
assistance to towns that win Main Street status.

Main Street status is a competitive process, and requires an
extensive application form with community input.  Filling it out
is a group effort.

Main Street is an intensive four-part strategy, involving
organization, design, economic restructuring, and promotion.
